A car accident can be very stressful, leaving you with no idea what your next step should be. Should you move your car or call the police? Should you get in touch with your family members or make a claim? It can be very confusing. Here is a step-by-step guide that can help you take the right decisions at the right time, should you get into a car accident at any point of your life:

#1: Checking yourself for injuries

The first thing you need to do when you meet with a car accident is to check yourself. Call 911 or ask someone else to do it for you if you are injured. If the injury is serious, keep still and wait for emergency personnel to come and move you.

#2: Checking the well-being of your passengers

If you are good to move, the next thing you should do is check on the well-being of the other passengers in your car. Ask a bystander for help or get in touch with emergency services if anyone seems to be injured.

#3: Getting to safety

Leaving your car in the middle of the road can be hazardous not just for you, but also for others who are traveling on that road. If you are in a position to drive and if your car is good enough to drive, try pulling it to the side of the road. If not, just leave your car at its place and you move yourself and your co-passengers towards safety.

#4: Calling 911

Calling the police should be the first thing on your mind should you get into an accident. The scene will have to documented by a responding officer who would also fill out an accident report. If the police haven’t been able to get to the scene of the accident, it is your responsibility to make it to the nearest police station and get the report completed.

#5: Waiting for help

Turning off your engine is something you should do, if you haven’t done it till now. Your next step is to turn on your hazard lights. This will send a warning to the other vehicles on the road to slow down. This may even help you find help sooner than expected.

#6: Exchanging information

If none of the passengers are severely injured, it would do good to exchange insurance and contact information with the other driver. Make sure you collect all details about the driver and his insurance company, the type, model and color of the vehicle, and the exact location of the accident. Avoid going over the facts and discussing faults.

#7: Documenting the accident

If you are in a position to document your accident, make sure you identify the officers who arrive at the scene, take pictures of the vehicles from different angles, and find out where you can obtain the copy of the accident report.

#8: Notifying your insurer and starting the claims process

Calling your insurance agent right from the scene of the accident can help in getting the claim processed at the earliest. They will tell you what you would need to do, in order to get your claim processed and how to get your claim processed.

Even the most seasoned driver can get frazzled in a car accident. Following these steps can keep you away from unnecessary stress and worries. You will be in a better position to work with your insurance company and get your vehicle repaired at the earliest. It would be better if you have an extended auto warranty on your vehicle. It makes sense to buy one beforehand, from one of the providers who might get in touch with you through auto warranty leads.
